Place the slices of bread on top of each other and trim the crust. Put the eggs in a suitable bowl and, beating with a whisk, slowly add the milk. Season well with salt. Cut the mozzarella into slices that are not too narrow. Grease the bottom and sides of an ovenproof dish with about one-sixth of the butter. Place the bread slices in the egg-milk mixture, one at a time, and toss to coat a little.

Remove, squeeze lightly and drain well. Spread the bottom of the pan with the bread slices. Form the mozzarella slices on the bread and put an anchovy fillet on each slice. Add another layer of bread, mozzarella and anchovies. Pour melted butter over it and bake in a heated oven (200 °C) for about 10-20 minutes until golden brown. Serve hot.
